Watch this short video and answer the following two questions.  Be sure to following the blogging rules.  This is a pass/fail assignment.

Dr. Anne Corwin explains to new parents and pregnant women the importance of touch, speaking, and eye contact.  Her target audience is clearly for parents of babies.  Do you think that these are also important needs of children in their later stages in life as well?  What would Lily say? (Respond to both questions for credit.)

Simba is clearly without his real parents in this scene.  What does he need from his friends to make up for his loss?  Go beyond the obvious.

On page 144, Lily reflects on the “odd ways of life.”  August’s mother met her husband-to-be (a dentist at the time) because of a toothache.  Lily ponders over the idea: “If it wasn’t for a toothache, August wouldn’t be here.  Or May or June or Black Madonna Honey, and I wouldn’t be sitting her talking to her.”  Think of an example of and “odd way” in your own life.  Read my example if you need help.

Example: About 9 years ago, I got in a fight with one of my friends whom I normally hung out with every weekend.  She decided not to invite me over on the weekends to hang out with all of the rest of my friends so I had no choice but to find other places to go on the weekends.  I started hanging out with an old group of friends and we went to go see a band (that I had never heard of) play in downtown Sacramento, a place I hardly ever went with my other friends.  At the show, I met the nicest man in the world (who was the bass player in the band) and eventually married him.  If I had never got in a fight with my girlfriend, I may have never met my husband and would not be where I am today!  I find it odd that the end of a friendship with a girlfriend led me to the beginning of a life-long relationship with my husband!

In a discussion about painting the house pink merely because May likes it, August states, “The whole problem with people is…they know what matters, but they don’t choose it” (147).  Give an example of someone you know that is guilty of this.  Yes, the person can be you!
